SimTech - Cluster of Excellence in Simulation Technology

In our research in SimTech we developed a system that enables scientists, even without cloud-specific IT knowledge, to move and run their complex simulation experiments in the Cloud at any time “with only one click” [SOCA 2013] [CloudCom 2015]. We call this system “ODP system”, where ODP stands for “On-demand Provisioning of Workflow Middleware and Services into the Cloud“”.

Our ODP system provides the scientists a “breathing” cyber infrastructure that assembles and disassembles itself automatically on demand [eScience 2015]. Depending on the course of the simulation experiment, it also allocates and de-allocates all required cloud resources and installs and uninstalls all required applications, execution environments, and infrastructures [Springer Computing 2016] [EDOC 2014].

On the one hand, our ODP system can be applied in arbitrary application domains for automatically moving workload into the Cloud. On the other hand, we also extended the ODP system to address challenges specific for the eScience domain. One important requirement in science is replicability, as it enables the validation and comprehensibility of scientific experiments. We developed a solution approach for the replicability of simulation experiments in our ODP system [SOCA 2014].

Tools

The SimTech Scientific Workflow Management System was extended so that the interaction between several scientific workflows can be modeled as choreography. A modeled choreography can then be transformed into executable BPEL processes. The model for choreographies is BPEL4Chor , which was developed at the IAAS.
